Broken

Poetry by Summer of Sisterhood (collaborative piece)

Every year
I watch another heart break
Post another memory
Create another hashtag
Light another candle
Release another balloon
Design another RIP shirt
Say another prayer
Write another poem
Mourn another loved one
Support another friend
Lay another rose
Close another casket
Count another grave

Summer of Sisterhood

This poem is a collaborative piece written by participants in the West Side Community House's Summer of Sisterhood program under the guidance of Ali Black in 2020.
The Summer of Sisterhood is an intensive, 8-week summer arts camp designed to teach inner-city girls how creative expression can transform a community and positively impact public perception. Participants work with professional artist/teachers in several areas of the arts, including music and poetry composition, creative writing, dance, and acting to develop a project that they write, perform, and record. The summer culminates in a live performance and/or showing of works.
