Balfour Blackout Composition
Mona Gazala
Ohio Writer
Source Material:
The basis for this composition is a facsimile of the Balfour Declaration. This 1917 historic document, written by Lord Balfour of Great Britain during World War I, gives his approval for the formation the future state of Israel. By blacking out portions of the letter, the artist subverts the document's meaning by drawing all attention to the long-disregarded portion of the text; the portion regarding the protection of the existing Palestinian community.
