eliza souers on the Editorial Mentorship Experience
“Midwest Suburbia: The Heart of It All” was inspired by a Tim Misny billboard, a donut shop from my hometown, and taking the same drive every day. I had no idea where I was going with it at the start of writing it, and I’m now excited to have it appear in Gordon Square Review. It feels so right for it to find a place in this magazine.
Receiving the email from Jason about the editorial mentorship made my day, and working with him was also a joy. Being able to discuss my piece freely and without fear of judgment was exactly what it needed to bring it to the level it is at now. Jason is knowledgeable, kind, and focused – exactly what an editor should be. I did not at any time feel as if my piece was getting dissected or disrespected, but rather, it (and I!) grew.
I usually write fiction, so sharing a piece directly from my heart and experience – this vulnerable and honest – is a little scary, but I am confident to be presenting it in this issue.
