back when still banana 
trees biggest high
school in world down
streets she walked
church baptized old 

house now jollibee dogs 
dirty teets tiny canals of 
trash palm trees
street kids grab my
hand press it to 

their foreheads say
mano po visit cousin
who thinks I’m boring
and stupid for being 

american not making
money bails on night out
instead karaoke mom
sings the carpenters i
frank sinatra sun sets 

rises over city of my
mother all around me in
the morning graveyard
we visit the plot of
grandparents shade of 

mausoleum kids sell 
corn buy little plastic 
forks mom doesn’t tell 
any stories no family 
history just stares 
at names isadora 
sinforoso pray 
one our father one 
hail mary asks if 
the corn is overripe

Kyle Seamus Brosnihan is a Filipino-American poet and playwright. Raised in Nebraska, he now lives in New York. He received his MFA in Poetry from Brooklyn College in 2022. His poetry has been published in Hobart, Peach Magazine, The Mantle, Interpret Magazine, and elsewhere.
